How to use ProfitMetrics events in OpenAI Ads

Which ProfitMetrics events your OpenAI Ads campaigns can optimise towards, and how to see POAS against each campaign.

Conversion Booster sends ProfitMetrics events to OpenAI Ads with revenue or gross profit attached. OpenAI Ads can’t bid on conversion value yet, whichever campaign objective you choose, so profit can’t automatically steer delivery today. This article covers which events work with which objective, and how to see POAS per campaign in the meantime.

What OpenAI Ads does with conversion values

OpenAI Ads counts conversions. It doesn’t use the value attached to them when deciding who sees your ads — on the Clicks objective or on Conversions. A Conversions campaign optimises towards more of its chosen event, and a low-margin order counts the same as a high-margin one.

The values still reach OpenAI. ProfitMetrics sends them, along with its custom events, so they are already in place if OpenAI adds value-based bidding. Until then they are for reporting only, and OpenAI's only column that uses the conversion value is Order created ROAS.

NOTE: OpenAI Ads is in beta and changes quickly. This article reflects what it supports as of September 2026.

Choose a campaign objective

The Objective you pick when you create a campaign decides which events it can optimise towards.

Objective Events it can optimise towards
Clicks Any ProfitMetrics custom event, such as PM Gross Profit or PM Revenue - New customers.
Conversions OpenAI’s standard events only: Lead created, Registration completed and Order created.

To optimise towards a ProfitMetrics custom event, set the objective to Clicks. A Conversions campaign won’t offer them, because OpenAI only accepts standard events as a conversion goal.

ProfitMetrics can send gross profit to any of the three standard events, so a Conversions campaign can run on an event that carries profit. It still optimises on how many of those events happen, not how much profit is in them.

NOTE: You can’t change a campaign’s objective or conversion event once it’s created. To switch, create a new campaign.

See POAS against your campaigns

You can’t optimise towards profit yet, but you can see it. Send gross profit to the Order created event and OpenAI’s own ROAS column reports POAS for every campaign.

  1. In ProfitMetrics, go to Connections > Integrations > OpenAI Ads and set up Conversion Booster with Custom Configuration, so ProfitMetrics takes over the Purchase/Order Created event and sends gross profit as its value. The full setup is covered in Set Up the OpenAI Ads Integration.
  2. In OpenAI Ads Manager, open Campaigns, click the Edit columns button in the top right.
  3. Add Order Created ROAS.
  4. Click Save changes.

With gross profit on Order created, Order Created ROAS becomes Order Created POAS (Gross profit divided by ad spend).

The column names stay the same, so make sure anyone else working in the account knows ROAS here means POAS.

CAUTION: Taking over Order created means OpenAI stops receiving revenue on that event, so you can no longer see ROAS in OpenAI Ads Manager. If revenue-based ROAS in OpenAI matters more to you than POAS, keep Standard Configuration, which leaves Order created alone.

Troubleshooting

Symptom Check
ProfitMetrics events aren’t offered as the conversion event The campaign objective is Conversions, which only accepts standard events. Create a new campaign with the Clicks objective.
You can’t change the objective on an existing campaign OpenAI doesn’t allow it. Create a new campaign with the objective you want.
Order Created ROAS is empty Check Conversion Booster is sending gross profit to Order created. OpenAI can take 24–48 hours to show attributed conversions.
Order Created ROAS still looks like ROAS, not POAS Check whether anything else sends Order created to the same ad account — OpenAI’s Shopify app, for example, or an OpenAI tag in your tag manager. Revenue from another source mixes in with the gross profit ProfitMetrics sends.
The campaign isn’t favouring high-profit orders Expected. OpenAI doesn’t use conversion values to optimise on any objective yet.
