# Connecting ProfitMetrics to ChatGPT via MCP
## How to add ProfitMetrics as a custom MCP server in ChatGPT on the web, register the agent connection it needs, and start asking questions about your data.
ProfitMetrics connects to ChatGPT through MCP (Model Context Protocol), the standard ChatGPT uses to plug in outside tools. Once connected, you can ask ChatGPT about your ProfitMetrics data in an ordinary chat.
You start a custom MCP plugin in ChatGPT, register an agent connection in ProfitMetrics using the callback URL ChatGPT gives you, then copy the client ID and client secret ProfitMetrics generates back into ChatGPT to finish.

### What You Need
Check these before you start.
| Requirement | Details |
| --- | --- |
| **ChatGPT in a web browser** | Use [chatgpt.com](https://chatgpt.com/) in a browser on your computer. Custom MCP servers can’t be added from the ChatGPT mobile apps, and the ChatGPT desktop app shows a different form that doesn’t support this setup. |
| **A ChatGPT plan that allows custom MCP servers** | At the time of writing, OpenAI offers this on Business, Enterprise and Edu plans, and on Pro with read-only access — which is all ProfitMetrics needs. Check OpenAI’s [Connecting custom MCP servers in ChatGPT](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/12584461-connecting-custom-mcp-servers-in-chatgpt) for the current list. |
| **Permission in your ChatGPT workspace** | On Business plans, only workspace admins and owners can add a custom MCP server. On Enterprise and Edu plans, an admin can give you the **Create plugins with MCPs** permission. |
| **Access to your ProfitMetrics account** | You need to be able to open **Agent Connections** in ProfitMetrics. |
**NOTE:** This article covers a single ProfitMetrics account. ### Step 1: Start the Plugin in ChatGPT
Start in ChatGPT, because ProfitMetrics needs the callback URL that ChatGPT generates for this plugin.
1. Go to [chatgpt.com/plugins](https://chatgpt.com/plugins).
2. Click **Add**, then **Add custom MCP server**.
Fill in the form:
| Field | What to enter |
| --- | --- |
| **Name** | Any name you’ll recognise, for example `ProfitMetrics`. |
| **Connection** | `https://api.my.profitmetrics.io/mcp` |
| **Authentication** | Leave as `OAuth`. |
Click **Advanced OAuth Settings** and copy the **Callback URL**.
**NOTE:** Leave this tab open — you’ll come back to it in Step 3. If you close it and start again, copy the callback URL again, as ChatGPT may generate a new one.

### Step 2: Register an Agent Connection in ProfitMetrics
The agent connection lets ChatGPT read your ProfitMetrics data and generates the client ID and client secret ChatGPT uses to sign in.
1. In a new tab, go to [Agent Connections](https://my.profitmetrics.io/customer/agent-connections.php) in ProfitMetrics.
2. Click **+ Register agent connection**.
| Field | What to enter |
| --- | --- |
| **Connection name** | Any name you’ll recognise, for example `ChatGPT`. |
| **Redirect URIs** | Paste the callback URL you copied from ChatGPT in Step 1. It must match exactly, with no extra spaces. |
| **Scopes** | Keep **OpenID** and **Sites Read** ticked, and tick **Metrics Read**. Without Metrics Read, ChatGPT can connect but can’t read your dashboard data. |
Click **Register connection**. ProfitMetrics shows a client ID and a client secret. Keep this page open for the next step.
**CAUTION:** Treat the client secret like a password. Paste it into ChatGPT and nowhere else, and don’t share it in emails, chats or screenshots.

### Step 3: Finish the Plugin in ChatGPT
Go back to the ChatGPT tab from Step 1. The **Advanced OAuth Settings** section should still be open.
| Field | What to enter |
| --- | --- |
| **OAuth client ID** | The client ID from ProfitMetrics. |
| **OAuth client secret** | The client secret from ProfitMetrics. |
Tick **I understand and want to continue** — ChatGPT shows this notice for every custom MCP server — then click **Create as a plugin**. ChatGPT checks the connection and lists the ProfitMetrics tools it found. If it asks you to sign in to ProfitMetrics, log in and approve access.
You will then be taken to the ProfitMetrics website, where you will be asked to sign in again, which completes the authorisation of the MCP server.

### Ask Questions About Your Data
Start a new chat, type `@` in the message box and select the ProfitMetrics plugin. Then ask your question in plain language. If your account has more than one website, say which one you mean. For example:
- What was my gross profit last month?
- How does this month’s revenue compare with the same month last year?
- Which channels brought in the most profit in the last 30 days?
**NOTE:** Selecting the plugin with `@` applies to that message only. Mention it again when a follow-up question needs fresh ProfitMetrics data — otherwise ChatGPT works from what’s already in the chat.

### Troubleshooting
| Symptom | Check |
| --- | --- |
| **The form asks for a Bearer token env var instead of OAuth settings** | You’re in the ChatGPT desktop app. Open [chatgpt.com/plugins](https://chatgpt.com/plugins) in a web browser instead. |
| **Add custom MCP server is missing** | Your ChatGPT plan or workspace permissions don’t allow custom MCP servers. On Business plans, ask a workspace admin or owner to set it up. On Enterprise and Edu plans, ask an admin for the **Create plugins with MCPs** permission. |
| **Redirect or callback URL error when signing in** | The **Redirect URIs** value in ProfitMetrics must match ChatGPT’s callback URL exactly. If you restarted the plugin setup in ChatGPT, the callback URL may have changed — register a new agent connection with the new URL. |
| **Connection fails after clicking Create as a plugin** | Check the client ID and client secret were copied in full, with no extra spaces, and that both came from the same agent connection. |
| **ChatGPT can’t find any data** | Make sure **Metrics Read** was ticked when you registered the agent connection, and that you selected the plugin with `@` in the message. |
| **ChatGPT asks you to confirm before using ProfitMetrics** | This is ChatGPT’s standard safety check. The agent connection only has read access, so ChatGPT can fetch your data but can’t change anything in your account. |
| **ProfitMetrics stops responding or asks you to sign in again** | Open the plugin from [chatgpt.com/plugins](https://chatgpt.com/plugins) and sign in to ProfitMetrics again. |
| **Shopping Booster fee data is missing from answers** | This is expected — Shopping Booster fee data isn’t currently available through the MCP connection. |
